Research-oriented perspectives and dimensions of the history of the University of Vienna with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries, with special emphasis on research, teaching and studying. The first volume of the series is dealing mainly with the research oriented epistemic history of the University. With epoch-spanning and long term analyses based on exemplary case studies, the relations and tensions between education, research and reflection within the University is on the agenda. Especially, the development towards scientificality, institutionalization and differentiation of disciplines up to the current "knowledge society" is discussed from different angles. Topics: "The Conflict of the Faculties" since Kant, Differentiation of Scientific Disciplines (esp. philosophy), Knowledge and Science Society, Science, University and the Public.

Katharina Kniefacz ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien. Dr. Elisabeth Nemeth ist ao. Professorin am Institut für Philosophie der Universität Wien. Dr. Herbert Posch ist senior scientist am Institut für Zeitgeschichte der Universität Wien und Lektor an der IFF der Universität Klagenfurt. Prof. Dr. Friedrich Stadler lehrt 'History and Philosophy of Science' an der Universität Wien und steht dem Institut Wiener Kreis vor.
