Beschreibung
Slavery is an old phenomenon. Until the 19th century, it was socially accepted in many parts of the world. Today it is globally illegal, and listed among the crimes against humanity, but not eradicated. Conditions in which human beings are reduced to mere goods can still be found around the globe. Our knowlegde on slavery is still fragmentary - with regard to certain periods as well as to regionally specific features of its emergence, forms and abolition. To this day, the traces slavery has left are visible, the strong impact it had can be felt - not only in Africa and the Americas. In this work international scholars deal with the concept and the history of slavery, its regional forms (Caribbean and Latin American) and contemporary guises. Thus it is dedicated equally to the diversity of slavery and to its comprehensive structures. It features a contribution by 1986 nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.
